Training

Roque Baños López was born in Jumilla (Murcia), in 1968. He completed his first studies at the Higher Conservatory of Music of Murcia, where he finished the elementary degree specializing in saxophone, obtaining the End of Degree Prize for Solfeggio and Honors in Saxophone.

Later, in 1986, he moved to Madrid, where he entered the Royal Conservatory of Music, completing his studies there. He received the End-of-Studies Prize, along with several honors and distinctions, earning degrees as a Higher Professor of Saxophone, Piano, Solfège, Harmony, Counterpoint, Composition and Instrumentation, and Orchestral Conducting.

In 1997, he passed the competitive examination for a saxophone position in the basic rank of non-commissioned officer musicians in the Navy, a branch he would serve in for the next 11 years. As an instrumentalist, he gave numerous concerts, both as a soloist and as part of various chamber groups, premiering works by Spanish and international composers. However, his musical path has led decisively towards composition and conducting, where his most significant work lies: he has premiered and conducted works at the National Auditorium in Madrid, the Reina Sofía Museum, and the Fine Arts Cultural Circle, as well as at the Alicante Contemporary Music Festival, among others.

In 1993, he received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and studied at Berklee College of Music, where he specialized in Film Music Composition and Jazz. He won the Robert Share Award for demonstrating "the highest level of dramatic and musical talent in the area of ​​film music composition," and in the field of jazz, he received an Achievement Award for his outstanding performance skills. In 1995, he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Film Scoring and Performance.

Career path

In 1998 he received his first commission as a composer of film soundtracks with the film "Secondary Roads" by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. Since then he has worked with leading Spanish film directors such as Alex de la Iglesia, Daniel Monzón, Carlos Saura, and himself. Martínez-Lázaro, and other international directors such as Jonathan Glazer, Marcelo Piñeyro, Brad Anderson, Gérard Jugnot, Kevin Reynolds, Spike Lee, Ron Howard,…

In his work as a film composer, he has received numerous awards and nominations, both nationally and internationally, including three Goya Awards. One was for Best Original Song for "Sevillana para Carlos," a track from the film Salomé directed by Carlos Saura. The other two were for Best Original Score for the soundtracks of the films Las trece rosas and Los crímenes de Oxford.

Nominated for the Mexican Ariel Awards for the music of the film *Amor, dolor y viceversa* (Violanchelo), he made history as the first Spaniard to be nominated for that award. He also received a nomination for the Argentine Academy Awards for the film *Las viudas de los jueves*.

He received the Toulouse Cinespaña award in 2003 for 800 Bullets. Three years later, he was awarded the "Colombian Cinema" prize for his work on Rosario Tijeras.

He has received six nominations for the Music Awards since 2001, for the films "Alatriste," "Las 13 rosas," and "Balada Triste de Trompeta," plus three wins for which he was named: La comunidad (2001), Los crímenes de Oxford (2009), and Celda 211 (2010). The latter two also received awards from the Cinema Writers Circle.

It is worth highlighting his work as an orchestra conductor, offering numerous concerts in Spain and abroad, in which he has performed his own works with great public success.

Among his latest works, exclusively American productions, it is worth highlighting the super production In the Heart of the Sea by Ron Howard, Risen by Kevin Reynolds, Don't Breathe by Fede Álvarez and Don't Breathe 2 by Rodo Sayagues, His House by Remi Weekes and Come Play by Jacob Chase, UMMA, a production by Sam Raimi, among others.

And from Spanish productions: Terry Gilliam's The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, Emilio's Miamor perdido Martínez-Lázaro, the Father There Is Only One saga and A todo tren by Santiago Segura, Adú by Salvador Calvo, Explota by Nacho Álvarez, the 30 Coins series, Veneziafrenia, The Fourth Passenger by Álex de la Iglesia, among many others.
