Career path

Mauricio Freyre is an artist, filmmaker, and architect. His practice unfolds at the intersection of film, installation, and performance, exploring blind spots, accidents, and distortions linked to the project of modernity/coloniality. In 2025, he undertook a research residency at the Reina Sofía Museum as part of L'Internationale's Museum of the Commons – Climate program, where he presented the film Mal de ojo (Evil Eye). That same year, his first feature film, Estados Generales (General States), premiered in the official selection of FID Marseille and IDFA. This project, also conceived as a three-channel installation, proposes a journey in which seeds preserved in the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid return to the southern coast of Peru, tracing a counter-narrative to colonial dispossession.

In 2021, his two-channel installation, Interspecies Architecture, was presented at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2019, he received the National Prize for Experimental Works from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture for his film A IS CID. He has exhibited his work at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, TENT, Centro Centro, Fundación Telefónica, Bisagra, W139, and at festivals such as Pesaro, Collectif Jeune Cinéma, FIC Valdivia, Strangloscope, and Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, among others.

Alongside her artistic practice, she teaches at institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts (The Hague), Syracuse University (Madrid) and the University of Navarra (UNAV), among others.
