Career path

José Luis Aparicio (Cuba, 1994). Filmmaker, critic, curator and teacher.

He holds a degree in Film Directing from the University of the Arts of Cuba. He has directed several short fiction films. Tundra (2021) and The Drying Shed (2019), and the documentary medium-length film Dreams adrift (2020). His films have been screened at festivals such as Sundance, Locarno, Miami, BAFICI, Guanajuato, Curta Cinema, and Raindance. He has received awards at Fantaspoa, Pendance, New Jersey, New York City Independent, and the Seattle Latino Film Festival.

His debut film project The sea He was selected for the Spanish Film Academy Residencies, the Cinéma en Développement platform of the Cinélatino-Rencontres de Toulouse Festival, and the Nouveau Marché of the Montreal New Cinema Festival. He is currently also developing a short fiction film. Spanish version.

He was a member of the Mezcal Jury at the 33rd Guadalajara International Film Festival, participated in the 3rd Castello Errante International Film Residency, was invited to the Open Doors program at the 75th Locarno Film Festival, and received one of the 2022 Prince Claus Seed Awards.

He has programmed film screenings for the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA), the e-flux Screening Room, the MACBA and the CCCB, the Círculo de Bellas Artes, the Casa de América and the Cineteca de Madrid, the Cinemateca Brasileira and the Punto de Vista Festival, among other venues.

He is the artistic director of the INSTAR Film Festival and co-editor of the annual film magazine Fantasma Material. He curated the exhibition for INSTAR (Hannah Arendt Institute of Artivism). Land without images, at documenta fifteen in Kassel, considered the largest retrospective of independent Cuban cinema held to date.
