I write Heroes in December knowing that there are many materials that I deposit in its foundations, but, quoting Antonio Rojano in the prologue of the work: “Is there any real separation between what we eat, university degrees, life as a couple? , job success, terrorism or the price of rents?” The piece arises from the same need that Berta, the protagonist, experiences, to make her skin crawl.
This is not a work about suicide but an attempt to establish a dialogue with suicides, without covering up and without imposing euphemisms on those who have experienced that leap to the other side. Heroes in December is the last attempt by someone who has tried to take their own life to recover life in capital letters, and not a substitute for it.
Heroes in December by Eva Mir deals with the difficult topic of suicide in the contemporary world. In our version we have focused on the impact that this issue has on the young adult population. The piece narrates the experiences of four characters in the context of their recovery after a suicide attempt, although in reality, the piece is much more. Full of layers and meanings, it is also full of humor, strength and an honest demand for attention on this topic. The process of putting together Heroes in December has been difficult, beautiful and very, very exciting.
It is difficult to talk about this topic: we know it, because we have done it during these months. The result is what we want to share with you, with the focus on what Eva Mir repeats over and over again through her text: we have to talk. Both as a pedagogical experience for our students, and as a full spectacle of young people for their peers, and also for other generations, Heroes in December has been in its rehearsals, and will be, in these performances, a deeply exciting and luminous experience. .
I think that this piece is a magnificent farewell to these young actors and actresses at the end of their training cycle, showing them and their audience one of the most formidable forces of theater, of the performing arts: their ability to make us talk, to make us say, to tell and tell us and give light in places that are sometimes problematically obscured.
